East Dayton Street Homicide Update

Madison Police are asking for the public’s help as they investigate a shooting that occurred early this morning (Sunday June 18) in the 600 block of East Dayton Street near the intersection with North Blair Street. Madison Police held a press conference about the incident this afternoon (6/18/23) and said the medical examiner will officially be declaring this incident a homicide tomorrow.

Police were dispatched to the 600 block of East Dayton Street for a report of gunfire at 3:38am. They responded to the scene and recovered about a dozen shell casings. A short time later a man showed up to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. An MPD officer was at the hospital when the victim arrived and helped carry him into the emergency room. Medical personnel rendered aid but the 20-year-old died of his injuries.

In addition, police shared that:

  • Several dozen people were present in the area when the shooting occurred, and police hope more will come forward with information
  • The people who brought the victim to the hospital are being cooperative with police
  • Lt. Jason Ostrenga of the Violent Crime Unit said at the press conference that there was an unusual number of fights reported on State Street last night between 1:30 and 2:30am (including one fight with 100-200 people involved) but it’s unclear if any of those fights are related to this shooting
  • At this time police do not know if the victim was the intended target or if someone else was the target and the victim was in the wrong place at the wrong time
  • Police say the suspect(s) are still at large and there is no known motive at this time
