A home invasion over the weekend (6/17/23) left a family shaken and fearing for their safety and the Dane County Sheriff’s Office asking the public for help identifying the suspects.

The incident happened on Saturday morning in the 3800 block of Silverbell Road in the Town of Middleton at around 5am.

The victims told NBC15 News they woke up to people trying to get into their home. “The wife ran and pushed her weight against their mudroom door, which did not have a lock to prevent the intruders from coming inside.”

The Dane County Sheriff’s Office says a garage remote left in an unlocked vehicle parked in the driveway allowed the suspects to entire the garage.

The husband told NBC15 News that he tried to get the suspects to leave by running out the front door and yelling at them. That’s when of the suspects pulled out a gun and fired shots toward him as they sped off in a stolen 2023 Hyundai Elantra. The husband was able to hide behind a tree and those bullets hit their home instead.

The family says they now “feel unsafe in their own home. They are sensitive to hearing a door knock or a bell ring. They want to warn others this can happen anywhere.”

If you recognize the suspects or have any information about this incident, you can contact the Dane County Sheriff’s Office Tip Line at 608-284-6900. Tipsters can also submit information anonymously by contacting Madison Area Crime Stoppers at 608-266-6014 or online at P3Tips.com.

To help protect yourself and prevent crimes of opportunity like this one, consider establishing a 9pm Routine to check that your home, garage and vehicles are locked up each night before you turn in. Lock your vehicle even when it’s parked in your garage and consider taking your garage remote with you each time rather than storing it in your vehicle. Technology like Ring plug-in cameras or smart garage door openers like MyQ can help you monitor whether your garage door is open or closed and let you know if someone has entered.
