At least two thieves have been stealing motorcycles in the city of Madison over the last couple of weeks. Madison Police tell us that the majority of these crimes are occurring in garages downtown and involve the thieves getting into the ignition systems of older bikes and hot wiring them. However one newer BMW motorcycle that was stolen in late June may have been taken by being lifted into a getaway vehicle. The thieves have also used bolt cutters to get around locks on brakes and wheels.

One location on West Washington Avenue has been hit repeatedly. Over the weekend, Madison Police reported an attempted motorcycle theft in the East District and a moped theft in the Midtown District.

If you see someone lurking around motorcycles or mopeds and it doesn’t look quite right to you, err on the side of caution and call 911. Or if you remember something later, you can use the non-emergency number: 608-255-2345.
