Madison Spring Election Guide: District 18

by Safety Connection

You can impact public safety decisions in Madison with your vote in the Tuesday April 4th spring election in Madison!

Your District 18 candidates are Charles Myadze and Michelle Ellinger Linley.

Our pick: Charles Myadze!

Charles Myadze

Charles Myadze’s focus has been to listen and lead for the often-ignored Northside neighborhoods as a voice for the people on the Madison City Council. His hard work and dedication have brought lasting change and increased opportunities for those in the 18th district and his commitment to city-wide public safety is paying off.

Charles works hard to close racial disparity gaps in housing, education, employment, home ownership, health care, and the criminal justice system.

Charles Myadze:

  • Spearheaded the successful effort to bring much needed housing to the Northside on the Raemisch Farm property, after years of delay and opposition.
  • Led the Common Council to approve a pilot program for Body-Worn Cameras for police officers on the Northside and is committed to implementing Body Worn Cameras city-wide.
  • Worked with City staff and other leaders to replace the dangerous Troy Drive Railroad Bridge, which was a top concern of residents, families, and the Mendota School community.
  • Values a well-trained, culturally competent police department and collaboration with violence prevention, social services, and mental health services that are all a part of keeping communities safe.
  • Voted to fund additional Community Officers focused on building trust and legitimacy between MPD and our youth.
  • Supports the CARES Program, a mobile crisis response team that sends mental health professionals to those in mental health crisis.
  • Is endorsed by the Madison Professional Police Officers Association

Michelle Ellinger-Linley is a small business owner and employer, Madison Newborn Care (2006-current) and supports incarcerated birthing people, and young parents, Small Miracles Doula Program (2008-2010). She volunteers with Moms On a Mission at East High School and is a Fresh Fruit and Veggie coordinator.

Michelle Ellinger Linley:

  • supported the development of the Raemisch Property, as a founding member of theRaemisch Farm Work Group beginning in 2020, until she didn’t. And then she helped lead the charge to defeat it. It succeeded anyway.
  • is endorsed by the Progressive Dane PAC and will therefore have a city-wide agenda instead of a district-oriented mindset. She will be held accountable for every vote by this political action committee which has endorsed her, as evidenced by this statement on their website, among other things: “We make no apologies for expecting endorsed candidates to remain accountable to their campaign promises and to our progressive program. They are recruited to work with each other and Progressive Dane on a regular basis.”
  • says she supports safe, healthy communities and prioritizes public safety, but nowhere on her website does she mention police or police services. That is because she is the defund the police candidate and will exclusively focus on alternatives to policing.
  • is endorsed by the most vocal anti-police activists in the city.
