Here is what the Madison Police Department shared today about the attempted homicide that took place in a crowded area at bar time on Sunday April 9. This incident occurred in the 300 block of West Gorham Street at State Street.

* A fight broke out in a bar between two groups of people. MPD said there’s no evidence to suggest any of them knew each other before the fight.

* Both groups were asked to leave the bar and continued fighting outside. Witnesses and MPD officers in the area heard gunshots.

* Arriving officers found a 23-year-old victim with a gunshot wound to the chest. They immediately began life-saving measures. The man has life-threatening injuries, but he is currently in stable condition.

* Within 2 hours of the shooting, police arrested 22-year-old Kiante K. Jackson of Madison. He faces charges of 1st degree attempted homicide and recklessly endangering safety (because so many people were in the vicinity when this dangerous incident took place).

* The suspect had a firearm and police also recovered multiple firearms from people in the suspect’s group.

* No one from either group had any prior criminal history

In an interview with News 3 Now, Madison Police Lieutenant Jason Ostrenga thanked the many witnesses who stayed and cooperated with officers, the businesses who offered surveillance camera footage and the officers who saved the victim’s life.
